Discussion Paper on Accountability

The OCCHA Board of Directors is pleased to provide you with our Discussion Paper on accountability, "Developing a Structure for Accountability: How Accreditation Can Work for Public Health."

This paper, developed in response to health unit and member organization feedback through our strategic planning process, reviews the current accountability initiatives, identifies existing gaps and makes recommendations for the development of a comprehensive accountability framework, including providing incentives for 100% participation in the accreditation process.

This discussion paper addresses two of our strategic directions (See Strategic Planning), strengthening support from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) for both OCCHA and accreditation and exploring other continuous quality improvement initiatives. It is intended to facilitate discussion of how OCCHA and the accreditation process can better assist health units in demonstrating accountability, not only to the MOHLTC and municipal funding bodies, but also to the general public. The results of discussions generated by this paper will be used to improve the accreditation process.

This paper has already been circulated to the member organizations of the OCCHA Board of Directors and the MOHLTC, Public Health Branch. We encourage you to review the discussion paper and to provide OCCHA with any recommendations for improvement. We look forward to your responses and the continued development of this paper.
